Ramasimhan Murder case: A story of conversion and murder.

Yet another unknown chapter in Kerala history.

Ramasimhan (sitting)

A couple of decades after the large scale murder of Hindus by the Muslims of Kerala in 1921, there was a celebrated murder that happened in Malappuram District just two weeks before independence on August 3rd 1947.

Uneen Sahib was a wealthy Muslim businessman. His father Moidu Saheeb had leased 600 acres of land from Kundrackal Nair family near Kodur in Malappuram (dt) and was running a successful rubber business. He had built a huge bungalow there named "malaparamba" and had used stones from the nearby dilapidated Narasimha temple to build it. Uneen Sahib also built a large palatial house in Chemmankadavu near Malappuram town.

His residence in Chemmankadavu which still exists

Muslims in the 1920s and 30s were very poor and being one of the few wealthy businessmen during that period he felt obliged to help them and did it generously. He had incurred the title of Khan Bahadur for his philanthropic work.

He married the daughter of Khan Bahadur Kalladi Unnikannu a timber merchant and had 4 children. 3 boys and one girl. He was a handsome man and during a period where people had only bullock carts in their possession, he was seen driving around in his new Ford car. His two brothers Ali Bappu and Kunjiahmed were also well regarded.

He regularly entertained royalties and British officers in his bungalow

Uneen Sahib became terribly ill with a stomach ailment that affected his health tremendously. He became miserable and was willing to accept any help available and sought advice from anyone who would offer him a solution. It was finally cured by an ascetic who said that his health problems were due to his misappropriation and wrongful use of some stones from the ruins of the nearby Mattummal Sri Narasimha Temple.

When his stomach ailments were cleared, he started reading many Hindu texts including Dayanand Saraswathi’s “Satya Prakash”. He  became a strict vegetarian and eventually converted himself to Hinduism and took the name Ramasimhan. He also took a keen interest in improving the Narasimhan Temple nearby and did changes in his existing house to remove all the stones used from the temple. He stopped supporting the mosque he attended and his generous contributions to the poor Muslims. Instead, he started entertaning hindu priests, contributing generously to Hindu temples and conducted homas and pujas regularly.  He used to comment that he was merely "converting back" as his grandmother was forcefully converted during Tipu Sultan's invasion. His brother too converted to Hinduism and took the name Narasimhan.

This angered the Muslim clergy immensely. Not only did they lose a generous sponsor but he had embraced a religion that they detest. To deter others from embracing the same path, they brutally murdered Ramasimhan, his brother Narasimhan, his new Namboodiri bride Kamala and their cook Raju Iyer.
